Trump Announces from Riyadh: US Sanctions on Syria to be Lifted at Saudi Request

Riyadh: In a surprise move during his regional tour of the Middle East, US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday his intention to lift US sanctions on Syria, “at the recommendation” of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Trump made the announcement during a speech in Riyadh, stating, “I will issue orders to lift the sanctions on Syria, in order to provide them with an opportunity to grow.” This move represents strong support from the US administration, something that the head of the Syrian transitional period, Ahmed al-Shareh, has long sought.

This announcement comes at the start of Trump’s regional tour, which began in Saudi Arabia and will also include Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The White House confirmed that President Trump will “greet” al-Shareh during his visit to Saudi Arabia, noting that a meeting between President Trump and al-Shareh is scheduled for Wednesday. This anticipated meeting is seen as an opportunity to discuss the details of lifting the sanctions and its implications for the situation in Syria.
