Fes – Morocco – What began as an ordinary evening meal for Khadija Bouzanda, a Moroccan mother, turned into an unimaginable tragedy when her humble home in the Hay Tahin Hassani neighborhood suddenly collapsed. This devastating event claimed the lives of her husband and four of her children, leaving behind a human catastrophe beyond words.
“We were having dinner… the house just fell on us. I didn’t realize what was happening until I found the neighborhood kids surrounding me, and I couldn’t feel my legs anymore,” Khadija recounted from her hospital bed, tears streaming down her face as she spoke. In an instant, Khadija lost her entire family under the debris. Miraculously, she survived, albeit with multiple fractures, partial paralysis in her left hand, and an inability to stand. Her youngest son, who has autism, also sustained leg injuries and remains deeply traumatized.
Homeless, Helpless, and Without Hope
Today, Khadija faces a truly tragic situation. “I have nowhere to go, no home left, my son has autism, and my health is gone… I just ask for someone to help me live with dignity again,” she stated, her voice filled with despair. Khadija has not only lost her home and family, but also her health and any clear hope for the future, leaving her without shelter, without family, and without a means to support herself.
An Appeal to Compassionate Hearts
In light of these challenging circumstances, Khadija Bouzanda is making a heartfelt appeal to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, known for his compassion and concern for those in need. She also calls upon all Moroccans, both at home and abroad, as well as social institutions and local authorities, to intervene urgently and provide:
- Safe housing for her and her two surviving children.
- Medical and psychological care for herself and her children.
- Social and humanitarian support to help her overcome this harsh ordeal.
A Tragedy That Challenges Collective Conscience
Khadija’s story is more than just a news item; it’s a profound tragedy that raises critical questions about the reality of substandard housing in certain areas and the effectiveness of local authorities’ interventions in supporting vulnerable families. Will Khadija’s ordeal remain just another statistic in a long list of accidents, or will it stir consciences and prompt serious action to save what remains of this devastated mother’s life and her children’s future?
